EU leaders to discuss Trump’s threat to impose import tariffs at informal summit.

European Union leaders are set to discuss at an informal summit the intentions of US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on imports from the EU. This was reported by Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

“This is certainly a very serious situation. We have already seen that he is also implementing his trade-political threats. But so far, there are no specific proposals,” Orpo said. “Right now, it is important to act within the EU united, decisively, coordinate actions, and think about the negotiating position.”

According to Orpo, EU leaders will discuss the position and response of the EU at the summit if such a situation arises. Orpo believes that it is necessary to prepare well.

He also noted that the United States is ready to supply large volumes of LNG (liquefied natural gas) to Europe. Europe needs gas, and they do not want to import it from Russia.

“This is one of the good examples of how we can align the trade balance with the US,” Orpo said.

Recently, Trump has threatened several countries with import tariffs. He has already imposed a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on China, which will come into effect on February 4.

Countries intend to respond to these measures. China has also threatened to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
