Swedish Defence Minister Paul Johnson stated that Sweden plans to increase military spending by $1.3 billion to $13.5 billion by 2025. According to him, defense spending as a percentage of GDP will increase to 2.4%, and by 2028 will reach 2.6%. Additionally, the Swedish government plans to submit a budget bill for 2025.
Furthermore, Sweden has expressed a desire to lead a multinational NATO battalion group on Finnish territory. This decision is made by NATO collectively. Overall, as part of NATO's enhanced forward presence program in Central and Eastern Europe, eight "multinational battalion groups" have been deployed.
In total, Finland joined NATO in April 2023, and Sweden in March 2024.
