China announced on Friday that it will impose tariffs of 34% on the US, just a few days after President Donald Trump announced the same against Beijing as part of his plan for reciprocal tariffs.
The new tariffs from China against the US will take effect on April 10, according to The Wall Street Journal.
'The US has announced an increase in tariffs on imports from many countries, including China, under the pretext of reciprocity. This seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization and undermines the system of multilateral trade rules. China firmly rejects this and will do everything necessary to protect our legitimate rights and interests,' said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiaqin at a press briefing in Beijing yesterday.
'We have emphasized more than once that trade and tariff wars have no winners. Protectionism leads nowhere. We urge the US to stop the wrongful actions and resolve trade differences with China and other countries through consultations based on equality, respect, and mutual benefits,' he added.
17% tariffs announced against China on Wednesday are added to the 20% tariffs already imposed on the country by the Trump administration.
Trump praised his ambitious tariff plan on 'Make America Great Again' during an event, claiming it would restore the American dream and support jobs for American workers.
'American steelworkers, auto mechanics, farmers, and skilled craftsmen,' said Trump from the White House podium on Wednesday afternoon. 'They have suffered greatly. They have watched anxiously as foreign leaders stole our jobs, foreign cheats plundered our factories, and foreign parasites ripped apart our once beautiful American dream. We had an American dream that was often talked about. Four years ago you talked about it, and you are talking about it now. But not too often.'
'Now we are achieving our victory, while using many billions of dollars to reduce our taxes and pay off our national debt,' he continued. 'And all of this will happen very quickly. With today’s action, we can finally make America great again, greater than ever before. Jobs and factories will return to our country, and you are already seeing that. We will smartly support our domestic industrial potential.'
Trade announcements have created uncertainty regarding the cost of goods for Americans, which White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt downplayed during a press conference on Tuesday, claiming that the tariff plan 'will work.'
