After Donald Trump was reelected as president of the United States, interest among Americans in relocating to Europe has risen. This is especially true for members of the LGBTQ+ community and racial minorities who are concerned about the new administration's policies.

According to government data, the number of applications for Irish passports from Americans has reached its highest level in the last 10 years. In January-February 2025, the number of applications was around 4,300, which is 60% more than a year ago. France is also receiving more requests for long-term visas from Americans in 2025 compared to 2024. The number of applications for British passports in the last quarter of 2024 also rose to a record level not seen in the last 20 years.

Relocation companies also report a significant increase in inquiries. The company Blaxit, which helps Black Americans move abroad, saw a traffic increase of over 50% on its website after the elections. The Immigration Advice Service received 25% more requests from Americans. The Italian relocation company 'Doing Italy' has been receiving inquiries almost daily since the elections.

However, potential emigrants are aware that Europe also has its problems, including the rise of populist parties. In Germany, the 'Alternative for Germany' party came in second in the recent elections, while in France far-right leader Marine Le Pen was the frontrunner in polls leading up to the 2027 presidential elections before being barred from running for 5 years.

There are also practical barriers to relocation, such as employment issues, restrictions on remote work, lower salaries in Europe, and the complicated American tax system.

Despite these challenges, American interest in emigration to Europe remains high, especially among those who feel their identity and rights are threatened in the new political reality of the USA.
