Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy stated on Thursday on the 'Varney & Co' program that a $44 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is attracting investment interest from Asia.

At the heart of the Alaskan LNG project is a pipeline over 800 miles long to transport natural gas from the North Slope to Nikiski, a town in southern Alaska.

The Alaska Gas Development Corporation (AGDC) has determined that the average amount of gas the pipeline can carry daily is 3.5 billion cubic feet. It also noted on its website that 'many' of these will be sent to 'international markets,' such as those in the North Pacific region.

'We just returned from Asia, where we visited Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, and Japan. They showed interest in the gas pipeline,' Dunleavy told host Stuart Varney.

'For example, in Taiwan, they signed a letter of intent to negotiate a permanent contract for six million tons of gas,' the governor said. 'This will be the largest volume of gas ever allocated to a single investor in LNG history. They also talked about actual investments in the pipeline itself.'

Dunleavy published information about the intent of Taiwan's CPC Corporation to sign an agreement for the Alaskan LNG project on his Facebook page at the end of March.

Dunleavy informed Varney on Thursday that 'serious discussions' are also taking place in Thailand, South Korea, and Japan 'regarding the possibility of investing in the gas pipeline and purchasing gas.'

The project has been in the works for quite some Time.

'In this project, all necessary permits have been obtained, and all lawsuits that arose have been won,' Dunleavy said. 'We are considering the possibility of establishing the pipeline itself and then building an industrial gas processing facility that will send gas, but for now, we are focusing on establishing the pipeline among other things. Our goal is to lay this 42-inch pipeline in two and a half years since we have all the permits.'

'We will make a final investment decision, at least Glenfarne, which owns the company, a private investor and leader of the project, likely in August-September at the latest,' he noted.

In March, Glenfarne became the majority owner and leading developer of the Alaskan LNG project after reaching an agreement with AGDC, the press service reported.

According to the governor, the project will benefit Alaska. In 2024, Alaska's population was over 740,000.

'This will be 60 years of prosperity,' he told Varney. 'It is very important that it will provide fuel for our bases. There are several military bases in Alaska. We are bordering very dangerous neighbors. Our gas field in Cook Inlet has been declining for years, so it means that our bases will definitely be supplied with fuel. Our utilities will also have fuel.'

He also said that in the future 'we may consider production and the creation of data processing centers.'

Oil and gas is a significant part of Alaska's economy. Other major industries in the state include tourism, fishing, forestry, and mining, among others.
